The Managing Editors are passionate, ethical journalists and hands-on professionals who participate in the team’s planning processes, ensuring its short- and long-term execution, and lead our efforts to report on, curate and share the nation’s most relevant daily and enterprise news content across multiple platforms. We are a daily newswire service that covers state government, statewide and metro news with a taxpayers’ sensibility. This position oversees The Center Square's operations on the western side of the country. The preferred candidate will live in the Mountain or Pacific time zone.

Duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Supervise regional editors, associate editors and reporters as assigned, manage planning of coverage in assigned states, edit daily news stories and post to TheCenterSquare.com
  • Report on state government activity and breaking news as necessary, monitor legislative and policy developments that affect the region, and work with regional editors and reporters to use public records and databases to ferret out waste, fraud and abuse.
  • Help grow The Center Square’s expansion into video content in western states.
  • Recruit staff journalists and freelance journalists to help cover assigned regions; supervise regional/associate editors in assigning stories to reporters and freelance journalists, and edit stories as necessary.
  • Actively work with regional/associate editors on promotion of The Center Square stories to local and regional media partners in the states.
  • Cultivate trusted sources to provide leads on potential stories, including those inside and outside government, think tanks, academia, unions and the business community.
  • Monitor the state media landscape to identify popular topics and potential media partners.
  • Manage financial budgets as it relates to freelance correspondents, staff salaries, etc…
  • Work with executive editor on identifying potential new media partners for content-sharing, distribution.
  • Work with executive editor on strategic planning, identifying story trends, exploring new and better ways to report the news.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Background in journalism or journalistic functions.
  • Experience reporting and editing for print, web, radio, and/or online video.
  • At least six years experience in journalism management.
  • Strong written, investigative, editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with legislative policy issues.
  • Ability to uncover original stories and break them.
  • Entrepreneurial approach and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent, proactive communicator.
  • Demonstrated understanding of planning and budgeting processes.
  • Strong commitment to the principles of personal responsibility and free enterprise.

The Center Square is a project of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Franklin News Foundation, headquartered in Chicago. The focus of their work is state- and local-level government and economic reporting. A taxpayer sensibility distinguishes their work from other coverage of state and local issues. As a result of this approach, their readers are better informed about the focus of state and local government and its cost to the citizens whose tax dollars fund governmental decisions.

Franklin News Foundation/The Center Square offers competitive pay and benefits, including health care benefits, retirement benefits, and paid time off benefits. The salary range for the West Coast managing editor position is $60,000 annually to $90,000 annually.
